Resize a batch of images

The built-in sips tool resizes any number of images in one command, keeping their proportions: sips -Z 1600 *.jpg makes every image at most 1600 pixels on its longest side. In Finder, Quick Actions → Convert Image does the same for a selection.

Without Terminal

  1. Select the images in Finder.
  2. Right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Pick an image size (Small, Medium, Large) and convert.

In one command

Make copies first, in a new folder, so the originals are safe:

mkdir -p resized && cp *.jpg resized/ && cd resized

Resize every copy to at most 1600 px on the longest side:

sips -Z 1600 *.jpg

sips -Z resizes the file in place. That is why the copy step comes first.

Or just ask Titan
Make copies of the photos on my Desktop, 1600 pixels wide. Do it with Titan

Titan is an AI that lives on your computer: tell it what you need and it does it while you watch — you press Return, nothing runs by itself. What is Titan?

Titan isn’t on this computer yet. Get Titan, then press the button again — the task will be waiting, typed in.
