Convert HEIC photos to JPG

Right-click the photos in Finder, choose Quick Actions → Convert Image, and pick JPEG. For a whole folder at once, one line in Terminal with the built-in sips tool converts every HEIC file and keeps the originals.

Without Terminal

  1. Select the photos in Finder.
  2. Right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Choose JPEG and a size, then Convert to JPEG. The originals stay untouched.

In one command

Open Terminal and go to the folder with the photos:

cd ~/Downloads

Convert every HEIC in it to a JPG beside the original:

for f in *.heic *.HEIC; do [ -e "$f" ] && sips -s format jpeg "$f" --out "${f%.*}.jpg"; done

Check the JPGs open before deleting any HEIC file. sips keeps the photo’s orientation and colour, but it is your only copy.
