Rename many files at once

Select the files in Finder, right-click, and choose Rename — you can replace text, add text, or give them all one name with a number. For patterns Finder can’t do, a short Terminal loop renames each file in order.

Without Terminal

  1. Select the files in Finder.
  2. Right-click → Rename…
  3. Choose Format, type a name like "holiday", and Finder numbers them: holiday 1, holiday 2…

In one command

In Terminal, inside the folder, number every JPG as holiday-1, holiday-2…:

n=1; for f in *.jpg; do mv -n "$f" "holiday-$n.jpg"; n=$((n+1)); done

mv -n never overwrites an existing file, so a clash is skipped rather than lost. Try it on a copy of the folder first.

Or just ask Titan
Rename the photos in this folder to holiday-1, holiday-2 and so on. Do it with Titan

Titan is an AI that lives on your computer: tell it what you need and it does it while you watch — you press Return, nothing runs by itself. What is Titan?

Titan isn’t on this computer yet. Get Titan, then press the button again — the task will be waiting, typed in.
