Make a PDF file smaller

Open the PDF in Preview, choose File → Export, set Quartz Filter to “Reduce File Size”, and save a copy. It shrinks the images inside; text stays sharp.

Without Terminal

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. File → Export…
  3. Quartz Filter → Reduce File Size, then Save as a new name.

In one command

Check how much smaller it got, side by side:

ls -lh original.pdf smaller.pdf

Reduce File Size can make photos look soft. Keep the original until you have checked the copy.
