Find what is slowing your computer down

Activity Monitor’s CPU tab, sorted by % CPU, shows what is working hardest right now. The same answer is one line in Terminal: ps sorted by CPU lists the busiest processes first.

Without Terminal

  1. Open Activity Monitor (⌘Space, type Activity).
  2. Click the CPU tab and sort by % CPU.
  3. Check the Memory tab too: a red memory-pressure graph means too many apps open.

In one command

The five busiest processes right now:

ps -Aceo pid,pcpu,comm -r | head -6

A process like mds_stores (Spotlight indexing) or backupd (Time Machine) is busy for a while and then settles. Quit apps you know, not system processes.

Or just ask Titan
My computer feels slow — what is using it, and what can I close? Do it with Titan

Titan is an AI that lives on your computer: tell it what you need and it does it while you watch — you press Return, nothing runs by itself. What is Titan?

Titan isn’t on this computer yet. Get Titan, then press the button again — the task will be waiting, typed in.
