Convert a Word document to plain text

Open it in Pages or TextEdit and choose File → Export To → Plain Text. The built-in textutil does it in one line, and handles a whole folder of .docx files at once.

Without Terminal

  1. Open the document in TextEdit (or Pages).
  2. Format → Make Plain Text (TextEdit), or File → Export To → Plain Text (Pages).
  3. Save.

In one command

One document:

textutil -convert txt report.docx

Every .docx in the folder:

textutil -convert txt *.docx

Plain text keeps the words and drops the formatting, images and tables’ layout.

Or just ask Titan
