Count the words in a document
Pages and Word show a live word count (View → Show Word Count). From Terminal, the built-in textutil turns a .docx into plain text and wc -w counts it.

Count the words in a Word document:
textutil -convert txt -stdout essay.docx | wc -wOr a plain text file:
