Compress a JPG

Save it again at a lower quality. sips ships with the system and takes a quality from 0 to 100; around 60 is hard to tell apart and often half the file.

How

Save a smaller copy at quality 60:

sips -s formatOptions 60 photo.jpg --out photo-small.jpg

Compare the two sizes:

ls -lh photo.jpg photo-small.jpg

Lower quality throws detail away for good, so write to a new file and keep the original. To make it smaller in pixels too, see resizing images.
