Trim a video

avconvert ships with the system and trims without re-encoding, so it takes seconds and loses no quality: give it where to start and how long to keep.

Without Terminal

  1. Open the video in QuickTime Player.
  2. Choose Edit → Trim.
  3. Drag the yellow handles to the part you want, click Trim, then File → Save.

In one command

Keep 10 seconds, starting 5 seconds in:

avconvert --source video.mp4 --preset PresetPassthrough --output trimmed.mp4 --start 5 --duration 10

Passthrough cuts on the nearest keyframe, so the start can land a fraction of a second early. For a frame-exact cut, use a preset like PresetHighestQuality instead — slower, because it re-encodes.

Or just ask Titan
Cut this video down to just the part from 0:05 to 0:15. Do it with Titan

Titan is an AI that lives on your computer: tell it what you need and it does it while you watch — you press Return, nothing runs by itself. What is Titan?

Titan isn’t on this computer yet. Get Titan, then press the button again — the task will be waiting, typed in.
