See how big a folder is

Select the folder in Finder and press ⌘I — Get Info adds up everything inside. In Terminal, du -sh prints a folder’s total size in one line.

Without Terminal

  1. Select the folder in Finder.
  2. Press ⌘I; Size shows the total once it has finished counting.

In one command

Total size of a folder:

du -sh ~/Movies

The biggest folders inside your home folder, largest first:

du -sh ~/* 2>/dev/null | sort -rh | head
