Get the audio out of a video

In QuickTime Player, File → Export As → Audio Only saves the sound as an .m4a file. The built-in avconvert tool does it in one command with the PresetAppleM4A preset.

Without Terminal

  1. Open the video in QuickTime Player.
  2. File → Export As → Audio Only.
  3. Save the .m4a file.

In one command

Save just the audio track as an M4A file:

avconvert --source video.mov --preset PresetAppleM4A --output audio.m4a
Or just ask Titan
Pull the audio out of the lecture video in my Downloads. Do it with Titan

Titan is an AI that lives on your computer: tell it what you need and it does it while you watch — you press Return, nothing runs by itself. What is Titan?

Titan isn’t on this computer yet. Get Titan, then press the button again — the task will be waiting, typed in.
