Check your disk’s health
Disk Utility → select the disk → First Aid checks it for errors. For the drive’s own verdict, diskutil info reports its SMART status: “Verified” means it reports no problems.
Without Terminal
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select the disk in the sidebar.
- Click First Aid → Run.
In one command
The drive’s own health report:
diskutil info / | grep -E 'SMART Status|Solid State'
“Failing” means copy anything important off it today. “Not Supported” is normal for many external drives.
